Given the recent upheavel in financial markets, analysts are asking if a green economy is the way to go. Thomas Friedman, author of the best-seller The World Is Flat, writes:
"The exciting thing about the energy technology revolution is that it spans the whole economy — from green-collar construction jobs to high-tech solar panel designing jobs. It could lift so many boats.
"You can't base a national economy on credit cards. But you can base it on solar panels, wind turbines, smart biofuels and a massive program to weatherize every building and home in America."

There is an interesting book, I read recently, which is a rebuttal of Friedman's arguemtns on globalization in his book, "The world is flat." The book talks about ecological sustainability, globalization and debt ridden, credit card driven american economy, among other things.
The book is by Aronica and Ramdoo, "The World is Flat? A Critical Analysis of Thomas Friedman'sman's New York Times Bestseller," which offers a counterperspective to Friedman's theory on globalization.
Interestingly enough, the book written about two years back, discusses in the following chapters,

"A Paradigm Shift for America" with prescriptions for the future

This is a small book compared to the 600 page tome by Friedman, and aimed at the common man and students alike. The authors point to the fact that there isn't a single table or data footnote in Friedman's entire book.
